Two years ago, my sister (an elementary teacher with a love of science) gave me the Growing Up Wild book.  For the past two summers, I have intended to crack open this awesome book and DIG IN with my own kids.  We have looked at the guide and done a few of the activities, but now I'm ready to to really work through the 27 lessons (with about 400 activities)!  Ok, we're not going to do every single activity, but A LOT of them!  And I want you to JOIN ME!

Starting July 14th, I will start a 6-week series using the Growing Up Wild lessons.  You will need the guide to join me.  We'll work through the lessons together and have a blast while spending quality time with our kids and helping them to GROW UP WILD!

You can either buy your own guide for $24.95 or ENTER TO WIN ONE HERE :)  Project Wild is generously giving one guide away to a LGM reader who will be joining me in this 6-week series (though you can adapt it to your own time frame)!  Simply leave ONE comment below to enter.  (contest open to US residents only.  winner will be chosen on July 7th using random.org.  Only one entry per email address.)

Each lesson offers multiple activity components including:  Healthy Me ideas, snack suggestions (oh how I love themed snacks), Take Me Outside (unplug those kids!), Music and Movement, Art, Home Connection ideas, and MORE!  Seriously, this is a wonderful resource for anyone with preschool-kindergarten youngsters in their life!  Read more about the guide here.

Headbands that will (almost) cure headaches

11/18/2010

I have my fair share of headaches right now because I just started a NEW JOB!  I had the opportunity to take a long-term sub position for a local school counselor and couldn't pass up the chance to earn a little extra dough before bambino #2 as well as trying on the whole WORKING MOM routine.  After 3 days of work, I can say that it feels really good to be back in my professional role, Zel has already grown a lot in terms of not being the center of attention and learning to share, and that I cherish my few hours with her even more than before.  I can also say that given the choice (ie a world where money doesn't exist), I'd choose to stay home with my little dumpling.  But, it's only been THREE days, so I'll report back to you later!  For now, I'm aghast to tell you that I haven't been lazy or napped or read a novel ALL WEEK!  ahem...

Side note:  my new coworkers probably think I'm a freak 'cause one of my first "get-to-know-you" questions is always:  "so what are you serving your family for dinner tonight?".  I mean, I had trouble getting a healthy(ish) dinner on the table when I was home, now I'm COMPLETELY AT A CULINARY LOSS!  Thank goodness this job is just about the length of my 2nd trimester.  My family would have starved during the exhausting 1st trimester!

Ok, so you want to know WHO WON THE WHAT A HOOT HEADBANDS?  Many thanks to the talented Lauren who has patiently waited for this contest and now for results.  Thanks to everyone who entered.  I have SO many more awesome giveaways and ideas for this blog... stay with me... it'll come :)

Out of 18 entries (Mary Beth had to comment twice and so I counted her 1st one for the entry :)... LUCKY NUMBER SIX won the cornucopia of WHAT A HOOT HEADBANDS!  WAIT ONE DOSH GARN SECOND... KATRINA AGAIN!?!?!  She won my last contest!  Oh, my sister is going to be leaving me a LONG voicemail of complaints (she's entered EVERY contest I've hosted and never won!).  Oh well, good things come to those who wait :)

What A Hoot Headbands Review & Giveaway

Initially, this was a PAMPER THE MAMA giveaway (which occurred in September), but as many of you know, someone got “knocked up” and so now I am debuting this Etsy line during my pregnancy reveal.  And truly, it’s a perfect fit.  I am not one who is complimented on my cuteness or trendiness.  I’d love to be trendy, but then I’d have to shop and I don’t like to shop (which is why I rely on my fellow bloggers to point me in the right direction and save me the trouble!).

Since I am the main photographer in the house, I rarely have pics of myself.  So, I enlisted the help of some goons…er… friends to pose with the headbands.  Let’s just say that one of them might have kept her headband because she loved it so much (and I love her and was happy to share).

Birth Unhindered. A confession, a review & a GIVEAWAY.

As you (probably, you faithful readers, you!) know, I'm expecting BAMBINO #2!  I'm about 13 weeks along and looking forward to the end of that nausea... any day now... .  The pregnancy is SUCH a different experience from my first.  With my first, I was so excited and thankful to be pregnant, that each pregnancy symptom was seen as a blessing, an affirmation of my pregnancy.  I am trying to keep this perspective, but more often than not, I find myself thinking "thank goodness this is my LAST pregnancy"  (hubby will be scheduling a certain procedure soon after the healthy arrival of #2).  Pregnancy is HARD... and it is the best gift in the entire world.  I thank God that I am a woman.

Another big difference for me is geography.  With pregnancy #1, I lived in Oregon.  I attended a prenatal yoga class and met other like-minded women.  I seriously considered going to the gorgeous birthing center in town, but then opted to let my family practitioner deliver my baby in the small, rural hospital where my husband worked.  I was so supported.  It was so intimate.  It was a wonderful birth experience.  Everyone who worked with me during my labor and delivery read my birth plan and followed it.  In fact, when I was pushing and ask my Doctor for some pain medication, he calmly waited for the contraction to stop and then asked me if I meant it and explained my very limited options.  A very unique experience in our western world of trying to control labor and delivery with medications, metal devices, beds...  I am very thankful.

Now I live in rural NW Pennsylvania.  I love it here.  But I do not love the corporate hospital or the lack of options pregnant women have.  In fact, every woman here has 2 options:  Use the hospital and get whichever OB is on-call OR .... what... OR WHAT?  The first few months of my pregancy were filled with that question.  You cannot have an easy labor and delivery if you are not comfortable with your surroundings and the people supporing you... I HATE the hospital here.  I HATE the fact that I might have met the doctor who will be supporting me, or I might not.

Then Tara's book arrived...  I have now hired a midwife and am excitingly preparing for a home birth!  Below is the review I wrote months ago when I finished reading this book (the first time).

Legare Furniture GIVEAWAY

Last month while researching GREEN PRODUCTS FOR THE HOME (ever notice that my reviews/ giveaways go along with a monthly theme?), I stumbled upon Legaré (which means “connect or join together” in Italian.  Consider yourself more worldy and go eat some pasta!) and reached a new level of covetness (I make up words.  Deal with it.).

If there was ever a PERFECT {lazy} green furniture store… this is IT!  Made from legally harvested bamboo or other eco-friendly MDF with low VOC emission adhesives, this furniture will blow your mind.  As someone who has bought my fair share of IKEA furniture and becomes a sweaty sailor-mouthed monster when putting the furniture together (not to mention, have you ever tried to take that furniture apart… and then use it again?  AHHH!!!  Marriage Counseling becomes a necessity!), I am ecstatic over Legaré’s NO HARDWARE, easy to assemble and disassemble, locking design.  Seriously, take a MINUTE AND TEN SECONDS to watch Suzy Sunshine put a desk together.  I think she kind of dilly dallied, so I could TOTALLY DO IT FASTER!  Plus, you can reverse most of their furniture for those freakish left-handers among us (HI MOM!)!

Book Review. GET REAL: What kind of world are you buying? By Mara Rockliff

9/1/2010

An Excerpt:  How Low Can They Go?
Check out this Starbucks offer:  Buy a bottle of Ethos Water for $1.80, and they give a nickel to "help children around the world get clean water."  Hmm... How about we fill our bottles from the tap, then donate the whole $1.80 to a group like the Blue Planet Project, which fights for water justice against greedy corporations."

Rockliff continues to discuss the world's water problems.  The solution ends at disposable water bottles, but the book is geared towards teens and just how deep of a solution can they handle?  I really appreciate the solutions given and have learned a lot about my own buying power and how to use my POWER FOR GOOD ;)  The book does make me feel a bit guilty at times, but that's my problem... actually the Earth's!

WIN IT:  This giveaway was open for the month of August to all my facebook friends.  Jennifer G. won this book!  Congrats Jennifer... perhaps this will be a handy tool at work (I happen to know the weener!).

BUT IT:  Head over to LGM's Amazon store and pick up a copy for yourself and your favorite teen/ college kid.  It's on sale!  NEW, only $7.88

Oh HAPPY day.  When my BABY is healthy and happy.  I love this FOOD!  HappyBabyOrganics is exactly like all the convenience foods I find at the local big box… except they are organic, not overly processed, and chock full of healthy nutrients.

I am lucky in that my daughter loves food.  She will eat ANYTHING!  In fact, her dad thinks it’s funny to feed her blue cheese ‘cause she makes horrible faces, but still eats it.  Meanie!

ESPOMA Organic Gardening Products Review & Giveaway

Time for a confession, I failed miserably with photographing my use of these products.  I kept saying that I’d do it… tomorrow… and then I kept waiting to post my review.  Now it’s time that I accept my faults, apologize for not having awesome pics to back up my review… and get this review & giveaway UP!

My husband surprised me one day by saying that he thought it was less important to keep our vegetable garden organic and more important to save our produce from destruction.  It makes so much sense to me, but as a family who buys organic as much as possible, I felt a little hypocritical.  We don’t use many pesticides on our garden, but when push comes to shove, we will “dust” our crops to save them.  Homegrown is still better than grocery store produce, that I’m sure of!

A wrap-up and a newbie

8/20/2010

It's NO secret that I sometimes procrastinate.  Don't we all?  And like you, I always have really good resasons :)  August is coming to an end and I haven't finished all of August's product reviews and giveaways (August's theme is Green Products for the Home... in case you didn't notice).

Today is the LAST day to enter the ThermaPod Mini Giveaway.  It's one heck of a cool lunch box.

Tomorrow I intended to post my Espoma review/giveaway.  Except I'll be out of town and I need to pack and I didn't finish it yet and the dog ate my homework and...  SO, here's a little prize for those of you who are loyal readers... you can ENTER TODAY... no mandatory entries!  Just leave a comment telling me that you'd LOVE to try Espoma products (feel free to rephrase)!  In a few days, I'll put the product review up and then I'll no longer accept these {lazy} entries :)

WAIT ONE SECOND... what is Espoma and what are their products?  Espoma is the maker and distributor of high-end natural and organic gardening products.  {YES PLEASE, I WANT IT ALL!}

The GIVEAWAY includes:  an Espoma Assortment featuring the Earth-Tone Insect Control, an 8 qt bag of Organic Potting Mix, a 4 lb. bag of ‘tone’ plant food and a bottle of their new liquid Gro-tone plant food.

WOW... that's gonna be one BIG box!  I will be reviewing the Organic Potting Mix and the Earth-tone Insect Control.  Remember, just leave a comment to enter.  Once my review is up, you'll have to work a little bit harder to win this organic haul :)
